Brazilian Portuguese Spelling Patterns That Confuse Beginners
Olá! Vamos conversar. Brazilian Portuguese spelling is largely phonetic, with a handful of consistent patterns that confuse beginners until they see the logic.
The ç
Used before a, o and u to keep the s sound. Almoço, criança, ação. Never before e or i, where c already sounds soft.
Accents
The acute accent (á, é, ó) signals stress and open sound. The circumflex (â, ê, ô) signals stress and closed sound. The tilde (ã, õ) signals nasal sound.
The lh and nh
Lh sounds like the lli in million. Nh sounds like the ny in canyon. Filho, banho. Memorize the sound, not the spelling rule.
