Brazilian Portuguese Pronunciation Guide for Beginners

Olá! Vamos conversar. If consonants are the skeleton of Brazilian Portuguese, vowels are the music. Most beginners struggle because English vowels shift constantly. Portuguese ones do not.

The five clean vowels

A, E, I, O, U each have a stable open sound. A as in father. E as in bed. I as in machine. O as in hope. U as in true. Once your mouth learns these shapes, half of the pronunciation work is done.

Practice them in pairs first, then in real words like casa, mesa, livro, bolo, uva.

Open versus closed vowels

Some E and O sounds open wider, others close. Café opens. Mesa closes. Avó opens. Avô closes. The difference often distinguishes meaning, especially in family words.

Do not panic. Listen to native audio for the same word twice and your ear will start sorting them on its own.
