Buying a SIM Card in Brazil

Olá! Vamos conversar. A local SIM saves you from roaming bills and turns your phone into a real travel tool. The process is short once you know the words.

At the store

Quero um chip pré-pago. Tem plano só de dados. Quanto custa o plano mensal. Three sentences carry the entire transaction.

Common carriers are Claro, Vivo, TIM and Algar. Coverage varies by region, especially outside major cities.

The CPF question

You will be asked for a CPF, the Brazilian tax ID. Tourists rarely have one. Some stores accept a passport. Others suggest using a friend's CPF or visiting a kiosk in a mall that handles tourists.
