How to Pronounce Nasal Sounds in Portuguese (ão, em, im)

Olá! Vamos conversar. The ão sound is the gateway. The moment you say não without forcing it, your accent already begins to sound Brazilian.

Where the nasal sounds live

Look for vowels followed by m or n at the end of a syllable, or for the tilde mark. Examples: mão, pão, irmão, bem, sim, com.

The air should resonate slightly through your nose without becoming a snore. Think of humming the vowel rather than blocking it.

Practice without overdoing it

Beginners often exaggerate the nasal sound and end up sounding cartoonish. Brazilians keep it soft. The goal is resonance, not volume.

Try this sequence slowly: mão, pão, irmão, coração. Then try não, bem, sim, com. Stop when your face relaxes.
