Por vs Para in Portuguese: The Simple Rule that Works
Olá! Vamos conversar. Por and para both translate as for, but they answer different questions. One looks backward, the other looks forward.
Por looks at cause, route and exchange
Use por for reason, the path you take, or what you traded. Obrigado por tudo. Passei por São Paulo. Paguei dez reais por isso.
If the for in English could be replaced with because of or through, lean por.
Para looks at destination and purpose
Use para for direction, goal, recipient, deadline. Vou para o Rio. Isso é para você. Preciso para amanhã.
If the for could be replaced with to, in order to, or by when, lean para.
