Portuguese Verb Ir: How to Talk About the Future Naturally
Olá! Vamos conversar. Ir does the same heavy lifting in Brazilian Portuguese that going to does in English. Memorize it well and your future tense gets easier overnight.
Present tense conjugation
Vou, vai, vai, vamos, vão. Five forms cover almost every situation. Eu vou ao mercado. Ele vai trabalhar. Nós vamos ao cinema.
Note that vai serves both ele and você. Brazilian speech rarely uses tu, so vais is rare.
Building the casual future
Brazilians prefer ir + infinitive over the textbook future tense. Vou estudar amanhã. Vamos viajar em julho. It sounds natural and removes a whole conjugation table from your homework.
