Portuguese Possessives: Meu, Minha, Seu, Sua Explained

Olá! Vamos conversar. Possessives match the thing owned, not the owner. Once that idea clicks, the rest is just a small table to memorize.

The main forms

Meu, minha, meus, minhas. Seu, sua, seus, suas. Nosso, nossa, nossos, nossas. Dele, dela, deles, delas.

Brazilians use dele and dela often to avoid ambiguity. Seu can mean your, his or her depending on context.

Article before possessive

Brazilians often add a definite article: o meu pai, a minha mãe. Both with and without article are correct. With article sounds softer and more conversational.
