How to Say Yes, No, and Maybe in Portuguese

Olá! Vamos conversar. A direct sim or não is grammatically correct and culturally rare. Brazilians soften, qualify, and almost sing their answers.

Sim with a twist

Brazilians often repeat the verb instead of saying sim alone. Você gosta de café. Gosto. Vai sair. Vou. The verb itself becomes the yes.

Adding sim afterward intensifies. Gosto sim, demais.

Não, but gently

Não combined with another softener is common. Não, obrigado. Hoje não. Acho que não. Pure não by itself can feel sharp.

Maybe and probably

Talvez, pode ser, acho que sim, vamos ver. Each carries a different weight. Pode ser is the friendliest non-commitment in the language.
