How to Tell Time in Portuguese (Que Horas São Guide)

Asking the time
Que horas são is the standard. Você sabe que horas são is the polite long version, useful with strangers on the street.
Brazilians answer with são plus the hour. São três horas. É uma hora is the one exception, because one is singular.
Half past and a quarter to
E meia means half past. Três e meia is three thirty. E quinze is fifteen past. Menos quinze or quinze para is fifteen to.
In casual Brazil, digital time wins. Três e quarenta is more common than vinte para as quatro.
